Scribble
Scribble is an abandoned mutant squirrel who is over the moon when he is brought to The Mall by Drak who was lonely, bored and in search of someone or something
new to fix.

His love interest at the beginning and later on again in the story is Aqua Velvet who is not included in the characters here but appears in the story-board. She has a tail, unlike Scribble, (his major defect) but she is completely blue and has long hair growing out of her ears.

In the middle of the story he discovers a DVD featuring Eddie Izzard,
famous British stand-up comedian who is probably equally well-known for being a very public transvestite. Scribble is hugely inspired, and raids the department stores in The Mall for his make-up and other necessities for the new identity he creates as his alter ego. He misses his mother and tries to evoke her presence by recreating her.

Conflict happens between Scribble and:

Cogs because Cogs thinks he’s a badly brought-up little (bleep); Drak, when he 'appreciates nothing she does for him', and Sheena because he will not be dominated by her and he comes dangerously close to undergoing a lobotomy at her little pink Barbie hands.

Inventing Scribble:
Scribble is quite a complex character and was a lot of fun to invent and to animate. Click here for the sequence of his character development.

Scribble - Technicals In developing the character walk, I decided that he'd have two different ways of walking - pure squirrel, and the upright cartoon style. Usually he travels in the plastic cup shown in the main picture. But at some stage in the story he puts on a lot of weight and since he can't fit into the cup anymore and he's among friends, he walks or rather, waddles, without caring too much about his lack of a tail.

Back Story
Scribble is abandoned early in the story at the old disused zoo near the Rhodes Memorial, Cape Town, along with various other mutant animals and outcasts, by his mother Amelia who is bullied into this action by his Aunt Agnes. Agnes means well, she is trying to save her sister from imminent murder by her abusive husband, Hugene.

Agnes, Amelia and Hugene are secondary characters, like Aqua (see intro on the right) and are only viewable in the storyboard at this time.So Scribble becomes a survivor, and from the time he arrives at The Mall, his character gradually changes from that of a youngster who displays every characteristic of a feral child - manipulateve, charming, a street-wise trickster, with a serious case of entitlement and little gratitude for anything anyone does for him, to someone who’s mature and can take on - if not the world, then at least some responsibility for his own happiness and that of Aqua Velvet.
