Sheena
Sheena is a Walter Mitty
figure, in that her inner vision has
little relation to reality. Unlike Walter Mitty she stream-rollers everyone
in her path, mainly because she’s found it works.
Her role in the
story demonstrates that, very often, people will judge us accord-ing to our own est-imation of ourselves,
even when they secretly wonder at the truth of it all.
Conflicts:
Drak, whom she orders around although Drak made her, or at
least enhanced her to her present state - this causes a con-cealed fear within
Sheena because she knows Drak can also decide to undo her work;
Cogs, because she is impatient with his erratic mind but she
needs his support; and
Scribble, because he is the only rebel who won’t kow-tow
to her.

Inventing Sheena
Sheena is based partly on Mr
Brittas, the obliviously offensive manager of a British gym in a popular sitcom some years ago,
and partly on an overbearing woman of my brief acquaintance, with a combination
of deep insecurity and a huge grandiose presence.
There was no logic to
what this woman said as she happily laid waste to the feelings of everyone
she encountered, and I found her utterly fascinating and horrifying.
Inspirations:
Click here for a slideshow of different images, symbols and celebrities that came to inspire Sheena. The most important inspiration for her physical appearance was the spider-doll character from Toy Story.
Back Story:
Sheena has a hankering
for a life of glitz and glamour. Back in the day, she was part of back-stage
life, ironing costumes for the stars - a far cry from where Drak found her,
lurking in the laundrette in The Mall, tired and steamed-off with being one
of several ordinary irons and one of the older ones at that. She borrows extensively
from her Life in the Theatre and most of her audience would believe she was
actually one of the stars, with her 'inside knowledge' of what goes on in
Hollywood.
